Lesson 5: Introduction to Lighting
A lesson that explores how lighting qualities (angle, color, intensity, and diffusion) tell the story, combining visual analysis with hands-on studio practice to teach students that effective lighting depends on safety, collaboration, and purposeful design.

Begin by practicing lighting observation. Use the images below to allow the students to cescribe light qualities, and based on that guess what the light source is supposed to be in the world of the movie. This will also link to lighting emulation, since in most cases movie lamps are used rather than the light students assume it is.


Before practice, show students the scenes from No Country for Old Men which was used extensively in the book to demonstrates lighting objectives:
